Teaching English in India

TESOL or Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages is usually used to talk about teaching English to people who do not already speak English. It's more commonly used by American teachers.

For more, see TESOL - Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages.

TEFL stands for Teaching English as a Foreign Language. Simply put, this is usually used to talk about teaching English to people who live in a non-English speaking country and who want to learn English for business or to take an exam, etc.

It is pretty much equivalent to TESOL and TESL.

India is the largest democratic republic in the world with a population of just over 1.2 billion people. The official language of India is Hindi with the second official language being English. However, there are a many regional languages (numbering millions of speakers) and especially in smaller cities and towns neither Hindi nor English can be heard.

Although there is a good demand for English teachers jobs tend to be poorly paid with few resources. A few volunteer positions are available and time spent in India is unforgettable time.

Some work is available in state schools.

On September 5th India celebrates Teacher's Day.
