One of the most popular children’s authors in the world today is Terry Deary.
After working as a teacher of English he began writing the massively successful Horrible Histories series.
In a very illuminating article in the British Daily Telegraph, he says:
“Now I never go into schools. They are awful places. They don’t teach anything worth knowing. I’m on a mission to get schools closed down and teachers sacked. I spent 20 years teaching – I started with drama but I was asked to teach English too. I hadn’t a clue what I was doing. I was just childminding. Parents don’t know what’s going on in schools.”
I don’t know if I’d go as far as Deary… but I do think there are major problems with the way many subjects are taught in schools and there is a growing need for a major shift in not only how subjects are taught, but also what subjects are taught.
What do you think?
