An American English teacher at a university has been jailed in China for stealing over $14,000 from a colleague.
Foster, an American teaching English in Guangzhou in China, broke into his colleague’s room where he stole over $14,000 in cash and travellers checks in April this year. The following morning he was arrested. The money was returned to the victim who reportedly said, “I have been in China for over 10 years. I have always put my cash in my bedroom and bring it with me when I go back to America. I didn’t know we could deposit foreign currency into a Chinese bank.”
Foster said he needed the money in order to return to the US for his mother’s birthday. He was given 8 months prison and fined about $1, 600. Foster 39, who has a Master’s of Education, first came to China in 2002 and began teaching English at the university in 2008.
The question I have to ask is this: how can two university teachers be so stupid? One of them leaves a pile of cash in his unattended room and claims he didn’t know he could use a Chinese bank; the other must have been pretty lax in his approach to get caught the next day…
